Although they fell in love with each other, the Weaver Girl was an immortal while the Cowherd a mortal. When the Weaver Girl's mother found out about the relationship, she brought her daughter back to the Heavens and forbade her from ever seeing the Cowherd again by creating the Milky Way river. However, their love touched the magpies and they came together to build a magpie bridge connecting the Heavens and Earth.The Weaver Girl's immortal mother eventually relented and they were allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. This poignant narrative of forbidden love, perseverance, and celestial intervention became the foundation of Qixi Festival, which is celebrated with great ardor to this day.
